Preventive Dentistry in Highland, MI
Stop problems before they start — and keep your natural teeth for life.
Most dental problems don’t appear overnight — they build quietly over months and years. At Highland Family Dentistry, our dental appliances and preventive treatments are designed to interrupt that process early, before small vulnerabilities become costly repairs. Whether you’re protecting a child’s newly erupted molars or maintaining your own enamel against daily wear, we match the right solution to your actual needs.
Prevention is the most effective dentistry we offer. The treatments below are straightforward, proven, and built to give your teeth a long-term advantage — not just a temporary fix.
Sealants
The back teeth — molars and premolars — have deep grooves and pits on their chewing surfaces that are nearly impossible to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush alone. Food and bacteria settle in, and decay follows. Sealants eliminate that risk before it starts.
A sealant is a thin plastic coating applied directly to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. It bonds into the grooves and hardens into a smooth, protective barrier that blocks plaque, food particles, and acids from reaching the enamel beneath. The procedure is quick, painless, and doesn’t require any drilling or removal of tooth structure.
We recommend sealants for children as soon as their permanent molars and premolars fully erupt — typically between ages 6 and 12. Getting ahead of decay during these years can prevent significant dental work down the road.

Fluoride Therapy
Fluoride is one of the most thoroughly studied preventive tools in dentistry. At the right levels, it doesn’t just slow decay — it actively helps remineralize enamel that’s already showing early signs of damage, often before that damage becomes visible or symptomatic.
We use a professional-grade fluoride varnish that’s applied quickly during your regular visit. It works on multiple fronts: reducing new cavities, slowing decay around existing fillings and crown margins, and significantly improving sensitivity caused by gum recession or exposed root surfaces. For patients with receding gums or older restorations, fluoride varnish is one of the most practical and underused treatments available.
Fluoride therapy is appropriate for both children and adults. If you’ve been told you’re at higher risk for cavities, or if sensitivity has been affecting your daily life, ask us whether adding fluoride varnish to your hygiene routine makes sense for you.
