Oral Hygiene Products in Highland, MI
What you do at home between visits matters as much as what we do in the chair.
Professional cleanings and treatment only go so far if the daily routine isn’t supporting them. The products you use at home — and whether they’re the right ones for your specific needs — make a measurable difference in long-term oral health. At Highland Family Dentistry, we carry and recommend a selection of professional-grade products that go beyond what’s available off the shelf. If you’re not sure what’s right for your situation, ask us at your next visit and we’ll give you a direct recommendation.
Sonicare Electric Toothbrush
Sonicare operates on sonic technology — a combination of high-frequency and high-amplitude bristle motion that produces what’s called dynamic cleaning action. In practical terms, this means the brush doesn’t just scrub the surface your bristles touch. The fluid dynamics created by the motion drive cleaning action into the spaces between teeth and along the gumline that a manual brush rarely reaches effectively.
The motion is also gentler on dentin than either manual brushing or oscillating electric toothbrushes — relevant for patients with sensitivity, recession, or worn enamel who still need thorough plaque removal. Over time, consistent Sonicare use supports healthier gum tissue and naturally whiter teeth through more complete plaque removal rather than abrasion.
If you’ve been told your brushing technique is causing gum recession, or if you consistently have plaque buildup in the same spots despite brushing regularly, switching to Sonicare is often the most impactful single change you can make to your home care routine.

Peridex and PerioMed Antimicrobial Rinses
Peridex and PerioMed are prescription-strength antimicrobial rinses — not the same category as over-the-counter mouthwash. They work by reacting directly with the surface of microbial cells, breaking down the cell membrane and eliminating bacteria that contribute to gum disease and infection.
These rinses are typically recommended following a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) procedure to support tissue healing and reduce bacterial load during recovery. They’re also used in the ongoing management of gingivitis where standard home care alone isn’t keeping inflammation under control.
Because these are prescription products, they’re not appropriate for general daily use without clinical guidance. We’ll recommend them when there’s a specific clinical reason — and explain exactly how and for how long to use them.
